We are creating a 5-year Mastery Curriculum for secondary science. Many curricula are good for grades, but are poor on the other goals. We get how important it is to get good GCSES. However, we seriously question the strategy of racing through content. This only leads to superficial knowledge that students find difficult to apply, which limits their performance at the new, more demanding exams.
There is a better way. It starts by realising that not all content is equal. There is a set of key concepts and skills that, once understood and practiced will enable students to learn all the details and facts more easily, and be able to apply their knowledge better In other words, they will be better prepared to succeed in exams (as well as future STEM careers and in life).
The Mastery Curriculum is a framework that shows teachers how to prioritises understanding the key concepts and becoming fluent with the key skills Our unit planners set out clear and precise objectives, and are consistent with the new assessment objectives AO1, 2 and 3 at GCSE.

- A better preparation for the more demanding GCSE questions (AO2 and AO3)

We are creating two versions of the Mastery Curriculum. One which any school can use and adapt, and one specifically for AQA’s Trilogy specification. Our work is supported by AQA and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
