In Blueprint, scientific enquiry means teaching students to think scientifically. Too often enquiry is all about the doing of science. But a mainly ‘hands-on’ approach isn’t very effective way for learning how to think scientifically or understanding concepts. What matters is the ‘minds-on’ element, the thinking behind the doing . We believe that this thinking should be explicitly taught, right from the beginning of the science curriculum. And that scientific thinking should be embedded in every learning stage. Then it can become a powerful set of tools to help them learn new concepts more easily.
We have divided up scientific enquiry into 8 thinking processes, outlined below. We have broken down each one into an objective for Year 7-8 (11-13 year olds) and Year 9-11 (14-16 year olds). The skills are completely integrated throughout Blueprint.
